Special Event: Tales of the Grateful Dead and New York

Last month I shared my trip to the New York Historical Society for the acclaimed Grateful Dead Exhibit running until July 4th, 2010. Visiting this collection was the best way to begin my Grateful Dead journey and it remains an important reference point for me. Whether you’re interested in Dead academia or wish to reminisce your touring days, I recommend stopping by this NYHS exhibit. And now… there’s even more to get excited about.

On May 27, 2010 NYHS will host:

Tales of the Grateful Dead and New York

“From the free concerts in Tompkins Square and Central Park to Filmore East and Madison Square Garden, the Grateful Dead considered New York a second home for much of the band’s 30-year touring career, and enjoyed a special relationship with New York Deadheads. Fans and experts share their memories and stories of one of the most innovative bands of our time.”

Speakers include:

GARY LAMBERT (Moderator): Co-host of “Tales from the Golden Road,” a weekly talk show on the Grateful Dead Channel (Sirius 32 and XM 57); writer/editor of the band’s official newsletter, the Grateful Dead Almanac; and a contributor to

PETE FORNATALE: One of the architects of Progressive Rock FM in the 60’s and a fixture on New York radio for 40 years. He is the author of several books, including “The Rock Music Source Book,” “The Story of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and “Back to the Garden: The Story of Woodstock.”

CAROL BRIGHTMAN: author of “Sweet Chaos: The Grateful Dead’s American Adventure” and a National Book Critics Circle Award-winning biography of Mary McCarthy. She is the recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature.

LENNY KAYE: as a pioneering rock journalist for such publications as Crawdaddy! and Rolling Stone in the late 60s, he was one of the Grateful Dead’s earliest and most eloquent advocates in print. From the mid-70s to the present, he’s been making musical history of his own as guitarist in the Patti Smith Group.

*Please note that this event will take place at the New York Society for Ethical Culture at 2 West 64th Street

“Down in front of Casey’s old brown wooden stoop
On a summer’s evening we formed a merry group
Boys and girls together we would sing and waltz
While Tony played the organ on the sidewalks of New York

East Side, West Side, all around the town
The tots sang “ring-a-rosie,” “London Bridge is falling down”
Boys and girls together, me and Mamie O’Rourke
Tripped the light fantastic on the sidewalks of New York”
